'Open the windows and let life in'

TRAUMA  is a psychic wound that hardens you psychologically that then interferes with your ability to grow and develop. Trauma is not what happens to you, it's what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you.  - Gabor Maté

ABOUT ME:

I obtained my Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of North West Cum Laude, completed my internship at Weskoppies Hospital in 1999 and have been practicing since 2001.  As a registered SHIP® facilitator (for more info on SHIP® membership see www.ship.org) I specialize in creating the psychotherapeutic safe space where internal hurt, disappointments and pain are addressed. Within these parameters each individual's healing process follows its unique rhythm towards integration and the release of stuck potential.

When people think about trauma there is a tendency to think of dramatic events and situations but as the work and research of  Gabor Maté, JO Steenkamp and Bessel van der Kolk indicates nothing dramatic needs to happen, being wounded without the immediate capacity to heal is sufficient to activate our system's survival response that freezes the too muchness that we were unable to process completely during the event. This resonates with my perspective on human pain and growth and finds application in my psychotherapy.

As part of my continuous professional development (CPD) requirements I have done various courses and workshops. The most recent are:

  • A 60 hour Integrative Somatic Trauma therapy certificate program from the Embody Lab during 2021;

  • Level 1 BWRT® training in January 2022.
